1) Brain, meninges and blood supply Flashcards
What fissure separates the 2 cerebral hemispheres?
Great longditudinal fissure
What is the difference between grey and white matter and where are they located?
Grey matter - contain nerve cell bodies
- makes up cerebral cortex, on periphery
White matter - contains axons
-below grey matter
Which sulcus separates the frontal and parietal lobes?
Central sulcus
Which sulcus/fissure seperates the frontal and parietal lobe from the temporal lobe?
Lateral sulcus/fissure
From which surface can the central and lateral sulci be seen?
Lateral
What fissure/sulcus seperates the parietal lobe from the occipital lobe?
Parietooccipital sulcus
Where is the 1* motor region located?
Pre central gyrus (frontal lobe)
Where is the 1* sensory region located?
Post central gyrus (parietal lobe)
What are the 3 parts of the brainstem?
Midbrain, medulla and pons
Where does the cerebellum lie?
Posterior to brainstem
Where is the diencephalon?
Superior to the brainstem
Where does the 4th ventricle lie?
Between the brain stem and cerebellum
What 2 parts of the brain does the diencephalon contain?
Thalamus and hypothalamus
What is the function of the thalamus?
Relay station between brainstem, spinal cord and cerebral cortex
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Controls autonomic NS
Which end of the neural tube develops into the brain?
Rostral end
What are the 3 meninges of the brain?
- Dura (outermost)
- Arachnoid ( middle)
- Pia (innermost)
What is the nature of the dura mater?
Tough fibrous membrane, adhered to skull
