05 - Overhead Components and Procedures Flashcards
How far must your remain from live electrical equipment?
2 meters
What power runs in the overheads?
1500DC
Name the different types of Staunchions.

What is a Staunchion Number?
The number represents teh distance of feet from flinders when multiplied by 100.
What are the Minimum, Maximum and normal average height of the contact wire.
Minimum is 4.4 meters. (Tunnels)
Maximum is 6 meters.
Average is 5.5 meters.
What is the purpose of Droppers?
Connects the Contact wire withe the catenary wire. They are live with 1500DC.
What are Jumper Feeders and Dropper Feeders?
Jumper feeders are thicker copper wires attatching two adjoining Contact wires and are used to conduct electricty from one length of Contact Wire to another.
Dropper wires are thich wires between Catenary and Contact wire to conduct electricity.
Whare are the different types of insulators used in the overheads?
Fibreglass, Porcelain and Wood.
What are the different type of Tension structures?
Internal Spring Type tensioning Structure
Weighted Type Tensioning structre.
What sign is a Terminal Stop sign?
A sign placed 15 meters from where the pantograph would leave the contact wire. (END OF THE LINE!)
A driver must stop at least 3 meters before this sign. (In practice it’s more)
What must you do if you spot faults or irregularities in the overheads, gives some examples.
Call TC for faults, if people are in danger then the overhead powers system be isolated immediately.
Examples Loose or hanging wires, broken droppers, anything in the overheads, broken staunchions, lots of sparks, lots of water etc.
How much power runs in a tramway system? Where both exist what is arranged? Who controls this?
Tramway systems run on 600DC, when both exist together one is isolated and the signaller is in charge of this.
