zonal soils Flashcards
what is a zonal soil?
major soil groups classified by covering a certain geographical area. mature soil that developed from the interaction between climate, vegetation and parent rock over a long time
what are the two zonal soils?
podzols
latosols
podzols overview
location: cool climates in the northern hemisphere
under coniferous woodland or heather moorland
key characteristics: dark brown/black
form as a result of acidic weathering conditions lack of nutrients due to leaching
human uses: forestry as coniferous trees grow well in podzols
livestock grazing
not suitable for arable farming as theres a lack of nutrients

latosols overview
location: tropical rainforests
tropics on or close to equator
south america and south east asia
key characteristics: deep 30-40m due to chemical weathering
rich in iron and aluminum oxides, which give them their reddish or yellowish hue
leaching of nutrients, latosols are generally low in fertility, particularly in phosphorus
human uses: not suitable for agriculture
humans use slash and burn to grow crops as burning adds nutrients
