salinisation of soil Flashcards
1
Q
what is salinisation?
A
an increase in salt content in the soil
saline water rises to the surface of the soil and the water evaporates leaving just salts
2
Q
what may draw saline soil water to upper parts of the soil?
A
high temperatures and dry climates as the salts cant be leached away be precipitation
3
Q
how does salinisation negatively effect agriculture?
A
salts are toxic to plants reducing fertility, yields or killing them
high salt contents affect how much water they can absorb which can dehydrate the plants due to osmosis
salinisation may also break up natural soil structure affecting plant growth and productivity
