Yr 12: Topic 1-1 Osmosis & Transpiration Flashcards
What is osmosis
It is a special type of diffusion that only involves the movement of water molecules
What is a plant cell called when it is full of water, and when it has little water in it?
Full of water- turgid
Little water-plasmolysed
What is transpiration?
It is the evaporation of water at the surfaces of the spongy mesophyll cells in leaves followed by loss of water vapour through the stomata by diffusion
What is the transpiration stream
It is the continuous movement of water through the plant, from the root to the stem and finally to the leaves
Go into further detail on the transpiration stream
As the roots absorb water, water also leaves the plant through transpiration at the leaves maintaining a constant concentration gradient.
How does transpiration occur, involve the xylem
The xylem carries water from the root into the leaf, where through diffusion it moves into the spongy mesophyll and leaves the leaf through the stomata by transpiration
