DNA Flashcards
How many chromosomes are in the human body?
46 chromosomes in the human body cell
What are genes?
A short section of DNA, also a code for making proteins (enzymes) that control characteristics within the body
What are different forms of the same gene called?
Alleles they can be dominant or recessive
What does dominant and recessive?
Dominant-will develop if the allele is present in one or both chromosome pair
Recessive-will develop only if both chromosomes contain the allele
What do the terms heterozygous and homozygous mean?
Heterozygous- when the alleles are different
Homozygous-when the alleles are the same
What is the structure of a nucleotide?
Phosphate
Sugar (deoxyribose)
Base(A,T,G or C)
What is the 3d form of DNA called?
Double helix
