Topic 5- 1-Nervous & Hormone System Flashcards
What is the flow chart for response
Stimulus->Receptor->Effector->Response
What links the Central Nervous System and effectors
Neurones
What is part of the reflex arc (between receptor and an effector)
Receptor->Sensory Neurone->Synapse->Association Neurone->Synapse->Motor Neurone->Effector
What are the adaptions of the Axon
It is long so it can relay messages over long distances, it has an insulating layer called the Myelin Sheath which can speed up the rate of transmission of nerve impulses
What is the function of the Synapse
To ensure nerve impulses only travel in one direction
How does an electrical signal move over a Synapse
Neurotransmitters diffuses across the Synapse and once enough reach the next dendron another electrical signal is produced
Do Voluntary actions require the brain to make a conscious decision
Yes
Do Reflex actions require the brain
No they are automatic responses to stimuli
What are hormones
Chemical messages that travel in the blood
Where are hormone made
They are secreted by glands
What is homeostasis
Maintaining a constant internal environment
How do nervous impulses travel
They travel through neurones
How long does the response last for the nervous and hormone system
Short time-nervous system
Long time-hormone system
What is the flow chart for the hormone system (stimulus, etc…)
Stimulus->gland->hormone produced->target organ->response
What are the similarities between the nervous and hormone systems
They both respond to stimuli in our environment, and they are both responses for protection or coordination of the body
