Year 2 Biomechanics - Linear motion Flashcards
Characteristics- Linear motion
Movement of a body in a straight or curved line, where all parts move the same distance, in the same direction, over the same time
Characteristics- Direct Force
A force applied through the centre of mass resulting in linear motion
Characteristics - Centre of mass
The point at which a body is Balanced in all directions. The point from which weight appears to act.
Characteristics- Newton’s first law
An uninterrupted body will continue to travel in linear motion indefinitely unless acted upon by an external or unbalanced force.
Descriptors - Distance
Total length of path covered from start to finish
Measured in Metres (M)
Descriptors - Speed
Rate of change in distance
Speed = distance/time
Measured in Metres per second (M/S)
Descriptors- Velocity
Rate of change in displacement
Measured in Metres per second (M/S)
Velocity=velocity/time taken
Descriptors- Displacement
The shortest straight line route from start to finish positions (M)
Measured in Metres
Descriptors- Acceleration
The rate of change in velocity
(Final velocity - Initial velocity) /time taken
Measured in Metres per second per second (M/S/S)
Descriptors- Deceleration
Occurs when rate of change in velocity is negative or there is decrease in velocity
Measured in m/s/s
Final velocity - initial velocity / time taken
Speed/time graph
A visual representation of the speed of motion plotted against the time taken
Distance time graph
A visual representation of the distance travelled plotted against the time taken
Gradient
The slope of a graph at a particular moment in time
Velocity/time graph
A visual representation of the velocity of motion plotted against the time taken
