Anabolic steroids
- Used to increase the duration and intensity of training and exercise
- Often leads to increase strength and aggression
Beta blockers
These help to control heart rate and keep the athlete calm
Stimulants
These work as a brain stimulant, which increases alertness for sports people
E.g. Amphetamines
Diuretics
- Cause the athlete to need the toilet
- This allows the athlete to loose weight rapidly temporarily
- this could be used by a boxer to meet a weight category
Masking agents
- Used to mask the use of an illegal performance enhancing drug
- Could help an athlete pass a drugs test
Strategies to stop use of illegal drugs
- More drug tests at events
- More random drug testing at homes
- Harsher punishments E.g. Jail time
Dangers of taking drugs
- Death
- Heart attack
- Stroke
Violence
Intense physical force that is directed towards harming another individual or groups of individuals
Can cause injury or death
Deindividuation
When you lose your sense of being an individual; this can cause violent behaviour
Match fixing
When a sports competition is played to a completely or partly pre-determined result.
Against the law
Requires communication between players, officials or coaches with gambling gangs.
Spot fixing
When a specific aspect of a sports competition is illegally pre-determined.
For example a player being sent off at a particular point or a cricketer deliberately throwing a wide ball at a particular point

The act of watching something without taking part
