Year 2 Biomechanics - Angular Motion Flashcards
Angular motion
Movement of a body or part of a body in a circular path about an axis of rotation
General motion
Linear motion + Angular motion
Example- American football spinning in the air but travelling straight
Eccentric force
Force applied outside the centre of mass
Torque
A measure of a turning or rotational force applied to a body
Principal axis of rotation
Longitudinal (head to toe)=360 in ice skating
Transverse (hip to hip)= Sommersault
Frontal (through the belly button)= cartwheel
Descriptors - Angular velocity
Rate of rotation
Rate of change of angular displacement
Angular displacement/time taken (rad/s)
Descriptors- Moment of inertia
The reluctance of a body to move in angular motion or a reluctance to change its state of motion
Sum of (mass x distribution of the mass from the axis of rotation^2)
Measured in kilogram metres ^2 (KGM2(squared))
Angular momentum
The quantity of angular motion possessed by a body
Moment of inertia x angular velocity
Measured in Kgm2rad/s
Factors affecting moment of inertia
- Mass
- Distribution of mass
Moment of inertia directly linked to Angular velocity
High Moment of inertia = Low Angular velocity
Low Moment of inertia = High Angular velocity
Radian(rad)
A unit of measurement of the angle through which a body rotates
