Year 1 - Nervous System Flashcards
What is the central nervous system made of?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body
What is a stimulus?
Change in the environment
What is a receptor?
Detects a stimulus
What is an effector?
Structure that brings about a response
What is an example of effectors?
Muscles or glands
What are the responses that are controlled by the nervous system like?
Rapid; short-lived;localised
What is the proper name for the messaged that travel along neurones?
Impulses
What is a nerve?
A bundle of neurones
What is the junction between two neurones?
Synapses
What is the cell body?
Part of neurone that contains nucleus
What are dendrites?
Carry impulses towards cell body
What is an axon?
Carries impulses away from the cell body
What is a synaptic end build/synaptic knob?
Secretes neurotransmiter at synapse
What is myelin?
Material that provides electrical insulation and protection to an axon
What is a Schwann cell?
Cell that wraps around axon many times to from the myelin sheath
What is a Node of Ranvier?
Unmyelinated gap between Schwann cells
What is a neurone?
A nerve cell
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemical released at a synapse to allow one neurone to communicate with another
What is a sensory neurone?
Carries impulses from a receptor to the CNS
What is a motor neurone?
Carries impulses from CNS to effector
Examples of sense organs that contains receptors
Nose, eyes, ears, skin
Each receptor is ______ to a stimulus (it can only detect one type of stimulus)
Specific
