Course Work - Peak Flow Test Flashcards
What is the principle?
The test to measure the width of the airways to your lungs (the bronchi and bronchioles).
What does the width of the airways determine?
The velocity of air you can breathe out.
What is being measured?
The velocity at which air is passed out of the lungs when they are forcefully expiring air at their highest rate.
What is velocity proportional to?
The width of airways so we can tell if they are wide or narrowed compared to normal values
What are the normal values for adult male?
400 - 600 dm³/min
What are the normal values for adult female?
400 - 600 dm³/min
What are diseases that causes narrowing of the bronchi?
Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
What is another test that can be used to confirm some diseases diagnosed with this?
Spirometry
