Year 1 - Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
What is the spinal column?
A series of small bones, called vertebrae, forming a flexible and supportive structure down the back
What is found between vertebrae and what is its function?
Cartilage and to cushion them during locomotion
What is a joint?
A connection made between bones in the body
What is a fibrous joint?
Immovable joint held together by tough, fibrous connective tissue.
What is an example of fibrous joints?
Held together bones of the skull
What does immoveable means?
It cannot move
What is a cartilaginous joints?
Slightly moveable joint where bones are held together only by tough, smooth and elastic, tissue called cartilage
What is an example of a cartilaginous joint?
Intervertebral discs holding vertebrae together
What is a synovial joint?
A fully moveable joint in which a fluid-filled joint cavity is present between the two bones
What is an example of a synovial joint?
Knee
What is a ligament?
Tissue that connects bone to bone
What is a tendon
Tissue that connects muscle to bone
What is a synovial membrane?
Lines the cavity of a synovial joint and secretes synovial fluid
Whats is synovial fluid?
Joint-lubricating fluid secreted but he synovial membrane
What is the purpose of cartilage in a synovial joint?
Reduces friction between bones and absorbs shock
What is an antagonistic pair?
Refers to the fact that skeletal muscles act in pairs: whens one contracts, the other relaxes
What is a skeletal muscle?
A muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones
What is the musculoskeletal system?
The system of bones and skeletal muscled that support and protects the body and permit locomotion
What is sliding filament mechanism?
Muscles contain microscopic thin filaments, that side over thick filaments to allow a muscle to contract
