18
Q

Describe the engine on the C172S.

A

Lycoming IO-360 L2A
- 4 cylinders
- Normally aspirated
- Fuel Injected
- Horizontally Opposed
- Air cooled
- Produces 180HP at 2700RPM
- Ignition provided by 2 magnetos, powering 8 spark plugs.

19
Q

Describe the propeller on your C172S.

A
  • McCauley
  • 76 inch
  • Two blade, All metal
  • Fixed Pitch
20
Q

What type of flaps does the C172S have?

A
  • Single slot-type flaps
  • Driven by electric motor
  • 0º, 10º, 20º and 30º
21
Q

What is the oil capacity in the C172S?
What is the minimum?

A

8 Quarts
Do not operate < 5 QT

22
Q

How does ground steering work on the C172S?

A

Nose wheel is linked to the rudder pedals by a spring-loaded steering bungee which turns the nose up to 10° each side of center.

Differential braking allows for up to 30° of steering either side of center

23
Q

Describe the electrical system on the C172S NAVIII.

A

SYSTEM: 28-volt DC
BATTERY: 24-volt lead-acid battery.
STBY BATTERY: 24-volt
ALTERNATOR: 60-Amp
EXTERNAL POWER: receptacle located on left engine cowl.

Electrical power is distributed through electrical buses and circuit
breakers.

24
Q

What are the indications of a failed alternator?

A
  • LOW VOLTS annunciation
  • M Volts show discharge on ammeter
  • Run checklist
25
Q

Describe the ignition system on the C172S.

A

TWO ENGINE DRIVEN MAGNETOS mounted on the back of the engine.

Each magneto powers one spark plug in each cylinder (for a total of 8), providing redundancy and more complete combustion.

Magnetos are independent of the aircraft’s electrical system and each other.

26
Q

How many fuel sumps are on the C172S?

A

13 TOTAL
5 under each wing
3 under the cowl/fuselage

27
Q

How many fuel vents are on the C172S?

A

3 TOTAL
1 under left wing
1 inside each fuel cap

28
Q

Give a brief description of the fuel system on the C172S.

A

Consists of 2 tanks in the wings Total fuel capacity 56G/53 Usable
Fuel is gravity-fed to a three-position fuel selector valve (BOTH/RIGHT/LEFT), and then to a reservoir tank.
From the reservoir, fuel flows to an auxiliary fuel pump, past the fuel
shutoff valve, through the strainer and to an engine-driven fuel pump. Fuel is then delivered to the fuel/air control unit where it is metered and passed to a manifold
where it is distributed to each cylinder.

29
Q

What is the maximum weight in the baggage area on the C172S?

A

120LBS

30
Q

Give a brief description of the PITOT/STATIC SYSTEM on the C172S.

A

PITOT TUBE on the left wing provides ram air pressure to the airspeed indicator
STATIC PORT on the left side of the fuselage provides static pressure to the altimeter, vertical speed indicator and airspeed
indicator.

The pitot tube is electrically heated to prevent ice.
Alternate static source is located under the instrument panel for use in the event of static port blockage.
