Writing and Balancing Chemical Reactions Quiz Flashcards
Chemical Reactions
The process by which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances
Bonds Between Atoms
Can be broken, rearrange atoms, and form as new which all could form new substances with different properties
Reactant
Substances that combine on the left side
Product
Substances formed on the right side
Yields
Used to seperate reactants from the products and resembled as an arrow
Indications of a Reaction
Energy change as heat or light, unexpected production of gas as smoke or bubbles, unexpected change in color, or formation of a precipitate
Precipitate
A solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution and seperates from the solution
Physical Change
Change of state or phase
Law of Conservation of Mass
Atoms are neither created nor destroyed in ordinary chemical reactions, only rearranged
Coefficient
A whole number that appears in front of a formula in a chemical equation, used to balance
Word Equation
Describes a chemical reaction using names in paragraph form
Chemical Equation
Uses chemical formulas
Formula
How many of what in what state
Element
Atom
Covalent
Molecule
Ionic
Unit
Ionic Compounds
Use charges
Covalent Compounds
Use prefixes
Balancing
Write unbalanced, count atoms on each side, add coefficients to make numbers equal, reduce, and double check
Tips for Balancing
If something shows up more than once on one side do last and count polyatomic ions as one unit
Never
Alter subscripts when balancing equations, not predicting
