Pt seated, have them fully flex wrists and put back of hands together in front of them, and lower elbows. Hold for 60 seconds.
Phalen’s test
Similar to Phalen’s, except patient fully extends their wrists and puts palms of hands together, raising their elbows.
Reverse Phalen’s
Pt seated. Doctor squeezes wrist at distal radial/ulnar joint. Checking for pain.
Bracelet test
What do positive phalen’s and reverse phalen’s mean?
Carpal tunnel compression of median nerve
Pt seated, palm of hand resting on their thigh. Have patient try to lift a finger against your resistance.
Carpal lift test
Positive carpal lift test indicates?
Carpal fracture or sprain
Pt seated. Have them make a fist while strapping fingers over their thumb. Instruct patient to ulnar deviate their wrist (this should make hand go straight downward)
Finkelstein’s test
Positive Finkelstein’s test means?
DeQervain’s or stenosing tenosynovitis
Which directions will you perform the wrist stress tests on your patient?
- ulnar deviation
- radial deviation
- flexion
- extension
Pt seated. Have them grasp a piece of paper between any two fingers and attempt to pull it out. Modification: have them touch a finger to their thumb and attempt to pull these digits apart.
Froment’s Sign
Positive Froment’s sign indicates?
Ulnar nerve palsy
Pt seated, palm of hand facing downward. Doctor taps on 3rd metacarpal on back of hand. Perform bilaterally assessing for pain.
Finsterer’s Sign
Positive Finsterer’s sign indicates?
Keinbock’s disease (lunate avascular necrosis)
