Wounds/fungal infection Flashcards
Wounds and their effect on metabolism
increases metabolism
as the body heals, it diverts carbs, fats, proteins to the creation of new tissue (speeds metabolism)
If this happens for a long time, negative feedback begins and the body sends extra protein to the wound instead of the organs that need it (slows wound healing and decreases muscle mass)
Nutrition for wound healing
high fluid (replaces fluid loss)
Protein (correct nitrogen balance)
Carbohydrates (increases metabolic rate)
Largest and most versatile group of antifungals…
Azoles (similar to Amphotericin B, but less toxic)
Antifungal drug mechanisms
Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis
Disruption of membrane integrity
Disruption of microtubule formation
Inhibition of β-glucan synthesis; β-glucans are polysaccharides in fungus cell walls
Inhibition of ergosterol synthesis; ergosterol is similar to cholesterol in animal cells
Azole mechanism of action
Blinds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes causing cells to become more permeable
Antifungal most commonly prescribed for oral yeast infections
Nyaderm
Nyaderm mechanism of action
binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, creating pores in membrane to allow intracellular components to leak out of cell
Why are protozoa hard to treat once infected
go through 2 stages
Trophozoite (active growing stage where the organism feeds)
Cyst (protective capsule where organism remains dormant for long time)
Medication used to treat both bacterial and parasitic infections
Metronidazole (flagyl)
