Inflammation/Fever/Allergies Flashcards
1
Q
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
A
primary drugs for the tx of mild-moderate inflammation
block inflammation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (promotes inflammation)
2
Q
DO NOT GIVE NSAID when…
A
eGFR < 60
reflects kidney function
3
Q
NSAIDs
Prototype: Ibuprofen
Mechanism of action
A
to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis
4
Q
NSAIDs
Prototype: Ibuprofen
Primary use
A
for musculoskeletal disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, mild-mod pain, reduction of fever, dysmenorrhea
5
Q
NSAIDS
Prototype: Ibuprofen
Adverse effects
A
nausea (eat with food), heart rumor, GI bleeding, stroke
6
Q
NSAIDS
A
inhibit prostaglandin (vasodilator, hypotensive) release, inhibits clotting
high risk of bleeding
7
Q
NSAID management
A
- obtain baseline kidney and liver function test (low eGFR and high creatinine) and CBC (complete blood count)
- monitor bleeding time with long-term administration
- assess for changes in pain, reduction in temp and inflammation
- assess for GI bleeding
- use cautiously in elderly pts
8
Q
Systemic Glucocorticoids
A
- are anti-inflammatory drugs that can suppress severe cases of inflammation
- suppress histamine release
- inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins by cox-2
- suppress certain functions of phagocytes and lymphocytes
