What would classify a minor wound
superficial, not near the natural openings of our body, not heavy bleeding, small in size
What is the purpose of bleeding
to flush out debris or foreign matter
to clean the wound
which wounds bleed more
head wounds due to being a highly vascularized area of body
What is the proper procedure for stopping bleeding
Remove object if easily removable
Apply steady and direct pressure for 15 minutes
Apply clean tissue/cloth/gauze
get above heart if you can
What if the blood soaks through
Put something else on top without taking off the first layer
When should you clean the wound
clean with tap water right away and then only clean around wound with soap/alcohol/peroxide/iodine
What is the purpose of antiseptics/antibiotics
prevent infection
helps lessen scarring
promotes faster healing
When should antibiotic ointment be applied to the wound
apply within hours of wound
What is the max amount of time to use antibiotic ointment
until wound is sealed over (approx. 5 days)
How do you use antibiotic ointment
apply within 4 hours of injury
apply 1-3 times per day
may not need to clean wounds but still a good idea to keep wound moist and promote healthful healing
How do you know if wound is infected
inflamed
thick/creamy drainage
red streaks
warm
