Worship p44-50 Flashcards
What is worship
A word used by religious people to describe how they feel about and act towards God,
It is 2 way and through worship god also communicates with them
What does congregation mean
Weekly worship
“Congregation” is used to describe a group of Christians meeting for worship
What is communal worship
Praying with other Christians
This can help Christians with eachother as well as god and helps to strengthen the community
What is liturgical worship
More formal and set patterns are used for their services
The congregation responds by reading set words
The service and what is said are the same every time the congregation meets for worship
Which denominations use liturgical worship
Roman Catholic
Orthodox
Church of England
Why is liturgical worship beneficial
The familiarity of the service can help them reflect more deeply on their meaning.
Nothing said will be different from what the congregation believes
How does liturgical worship change during the church year/ during different parts of Jesus’ life
the Special church services celebrated during the year have have specific readings, prayers and rituals.
These reflect the spirit of the occasion
The colour that the priest wears during the service also expresses the character of what is being remembered
E.g
White and gold —> celebrations
Red—> remembering Jesus’ suffering , Pentecost, confirmation
Green —> when there are no events - represents hope
Purple —> advent as a reminder of the preparation for the coming of Christ , lent
What are the two main types of service in liturgical worship
The Eucharistic service
The service of the word
What happens in the Eucharist service
It focuses on the Eucharist
During this service the congregation receive bread and wine which they believe represent Jesus’ body and blood.
There may also be readings from the bible, hymns and a short sermon
Christians participate in prayer, confession and thanksgiving and they receive the bread and wine
What happened on the last supper
Jesus broke a loaf of bread for his disciples to eat and poured wine for them to drink
Jesus said that his body would be broken and blood shed and commanded them to do the same with the bread and wine when they met
What is the service of the word
It does not include the Eucharist (no bread or wine used)’
The service focuses on bible readings and the sermon
What is a sermon
A talk given by the person leading the service
What happens in Anglican worship
They use the book of common prayer of common worship liturgy books for congregational prayer
Book of common prayer sets out the words of the service and gives directions to the worshipers
During the service, hymns will be sung, and there are creed and gospel readings
What happens in an Anglican Eucharist service
The gathering - minister greets people
Liturgy of the word:
bible readings and a sermon
Nicene creed is said
Prayers of intercession and confession (reading of Lord’s Prayer)
The peace- they shake hands to show they are one community
Liturgy of the sacrament :
Preparation of the table - bread and wine on table, collections taken
Eucharistic prayer - gives thanks to god
Breaking if the bread
Receiving communion - congregations take the bread
Sending out of gods people:
Congregation leave the service
What happens in Roman Catholic worship
Use an order of service written in a missal
Similar structure of Church of England
What is the difference between the Catholic and Anglican belief in the Eucharist
Catholics believe in transubstantiation (the transformation of the bread and wine into the blood and body of Christ) but Anglican’s do not.
Catholics believe that at each Eucharist service, jesus’ sacrifice is recreated at the altar but Anglican’s believe that Jesus’ death was a single event and cannot be repeated
What happens in Quaker meetings for worship
A meeting lasts an hour
They take a seat in silence and use the silence to reflect and become closer to god
There are no set prayers reading or talks. There are no ministers as quakers believe in the equality of all people
During worship people can speak pray or read aloud - ministry. This is listened to in silence
There is a book called “advices and queries”
The meeting ends when two quakers shake hands
What happens in Greek Orthodox services?
The Eucharist is called the Divine Liturgy
Service is separated into 2 main sections which both involve a procession
At the little entrance the book of gospels is carried into the sanctuary
At the great entrance, the bread and wine are carried to the altar for holy communion
The first section is called “liturgy of the word” . It contains hymns, prayers and a reading from the bible
The second section is the “liturgy of the faithful”
What does the Greek Orthodox Church believe about the Eucharist
They emphasise the role of the Holy Spirit.
During the prayer if consecration, god the father is called upon to send down the holy sport to change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ
The bread is soaked in the wine
At the end of the liturgy, the bread has been blessed and is given to the congregation
What happens in Methodist worship?
They follow a liturgy and the services are similar to the ones in the Anglican Church
The church publishes its own hymn book.
The bible readings are taken from the revised common lectionary
Eucharist is called service of the table
They practise open communion so all people are welcome to participate in it.
They celebrate communion once a month
What does non liturgical mean
They have no set form and are more spontaneous
Which denominations follow non liturgical worship
Baptist
Protestant
Methodist
What do non liturgical services focus on?
The focus of these services help to reinforce the importance of the bible
The sermon is the focus and will help the congregation understand the message of the bible
What is charismatic worship and what happens in their service
The belief that it is possible to experience the holt spirit as the apostles did
“Charismatic” - comes from the Greek word for gift and is a reference to the gifts of the Holy Spirit
It doesn’t follow a set pattern and includes people dancing and clapping as part of their worship
Worshipers wand to be open to the Holy Spirit and want to be led by him during the service
Most common in Pentecostal churches
“His worshipers must worship in the spirit”
What is individual worshiper
Christians will spend time each day in their own private worship
It is important to believers as it is their way of developing their relationship with God. They are able to seek gods guidance for themselves
