What is a sacrament
A ritual through which the grace of god can be received
What do Roman Catholics believe about sacraments
As long as a sacrament is performed by a priest and according to the agreed practice of the church it gives the grace of god to the person regardless of their faith
What are examples of sacraments (Roman Catholic church)
Baptism
Eucharist
Confirmation
Reconciliation
Marriage
Holy orders
Anointing the sick
What is the sacraments of the gospel + who believes in it
The Protestant churched (church of England)
There are only 2 sacraments
Bapsitm
Eucharist
These two have a direct link to Jesus
What is the Eucharist?
This began when Jesus ate the last meal with his disciples
he told them they should share bread and wine in memory or his body being broken and blood spilled on the cross
What happens in Eucharist services
Congregations share bread and wine in memory of Jesus’ sacrifice
What do different denominations believe about the Eucharist
Catholic Church:
They believe in transubstantiation —> the bread and the wine are actually being transformed
Anglicans:
Consubstantiation —> Jesus is believed to be spiritually present in the bread and wine as his sacrifice is celebrated
What is the importance of the Eucharist
It reminds them of the sacrifice of Jesus and the salvation that they have received
It brings them closer to other members of the Christian community and this is also symbolic of their connection with all Christians.
It is a ritual established by Jesus which means that they are following Jesus’ command
What does baptism symbolise?
It symbolises a persons admission into the Christian church
The inclusion of water symbolises purification and being washed from sin
What is infant baptism and what denomination carry out infant baptism
Roman Catholic
Orthodox
Church of England
Infant baptism ceremonies are called christening
It allows the baby to receive Gods blessing
The babies parents make promises to raise the child as a Christian
This is often followed by confirmation
What happens in confirmation
A person reaffirms the promises that their parents made on their behalf when they were a baby
What is believers baptism and what denominations follow it
Non conformist denominations e.g Baptist / Pentecostal church
A person has to make a decision to be baptised
They have to be baptised as adults
They believe that gods grace is received when they express their faith rather than performing a ritual
The person has to be a believer before being baptised
Why do Christians carry out baptism
By being baptised people can become full members of the Christian community
In most denominations a person needs to be baptised before they can share in the Eucharist or communion
Baptism is a symbolical removal of sin and it causes transformation by washing away sin
Roman Catholics —> necessary for salvation
What denominations don’t carry out baptism and why’s
Quakers
They feel they receive Gods grace inwardly and there is no need for a ceremony
