The creation of humans in genesis 1. How are they different from the rest of creation?
“Let us make mankind in our image”
First reference to trinity as he says “our”
Humanity is being made in the image of god.
It is also given a purpose - to “rule” over the earth. They are given the responsibility to care for the earth acting as gods stewards.
Importance of Adam and Eve - genesis 2
“Adam” means humanity , Eve means beginning
God brought life to Adam by the breathe of life showing his unique relationship with humanity.
Role of spirit in the creation story
The spirit is the agent of god in creation
The Holy Spirit is the breathe of god. Holy Spirit is the life giver.
It hovers over the earth in the beginning and prepares to give life to the world
Genesis 3: The fall
Adam and Eve use the free will that god has given them to take the fruit from the tree of knowledge
The serpent challenges what god says.
Adam and Eve have disobeyed god. Sin enters the world for the first time. This is known as original sin.
The fall is used to describe the move from a perfect relationship with god to a broken one
What happens as a result of the fall
The fall affected everyone.
Every person was affected by original sin
All humans are born without a relationship with god and need his salvation to have a relationship with him
Unless the sin is paid the person has no hope of an eternal life in heaven with god.
Literal interpretations of the creation story
Some Christians (creationists) take the story literally.
The bible is gods word
The bible is inspired by god and his word is infallible so has to be taken as the truth
