Salvation Flashcards
What is atonement
Making amends for having done something wrong
The day of atonement
God provided a way for the Jewish people to atone for their sins by the atonement sacrifice
“On this day shall atonement be made for you”
The preset made an animal sacrifice. The blood of the animal would bring reconciliation between humans and God.
Christians believe that the priest was temporary waiting until the time of the true high priest Jesus.
By the sacrifice of Jesus a new covenant was made between god and humans
“By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus once and for all,
Religious law
The religious law condemned people and showed that they were sinful and imperfect.
No one could meet gods standards.
Under the new covenant people could receive complete forgiveness and have the Holy Spirit live in them by repentance
What is grace
An unmerited favour
Humans have gods blessings even if they are imperfect, as long as they have faith in Jesus
Humans are saved by gods grace
“For it is by grave you have been saved, through faith”
Sin
Sin entered the world through Adam and Eve
Original sin caused death
God offers humans a gift of eternal life in heaven because of Christ’s death
“In Adam all die so in Christ all will be made alive”
What is redemption
Paying off a debt
Through salvation god is offering to pay their debt of sin.
Repentance and forgiveness
In order to be saved they need to repent and say sorry for their sins.
Gods help is bought to them by the Holy Spirit which lives inside them.
Different understanding about how jesus’ death achieved salvation
- His sacrifice payed for all human sin unlike the sacrifice of animals by Jews, Jesus’ sins payed for sin once and for all
- alternate view is that Jesus’ death was a ransom which paid for the release of human sinners
- by becoming human god enabled humans to achieve a union with god which allows them to be saved
Different views about how Christians can receive salvation
Roman Catholics:
They can be saved by being baptised and belonging to a church.
Participating in sacraments
- evangelical Christians :
faith is Jesus allows them to be saved
