Working with the Community Flashcards
Upstream thinking?
Examining the community surrounding individuals can help gain insight and effectiveness in helping can be achieved. Helpers are nurses, doctors, therapists etc. and they often focus just on the individual needs. Community focus= helping more than 1 individual
What is a community?

Community orientation?
You design interventions that go beyond office/individual. Shift in thinking community as the client. Helping only the individual will maintain the status quo and this leads to reinforcing social injustices, inequalities, and discriminatory treatment.
Community mental health movement?
Began in 1950s, based on idea that human problems are rooted in failures in social system.
Stabilization>exploration
Human needs must be met first (food, shelter…). Someone who’s homeless isn’t going to benefit from self exploration/growth when they struggle to find food. We need to change the conditions that affects people rather than try to change people who are affected by conditions.
