What is a structured group?
Has an education focus. Designed to deal with information deficits, teach skills for more effective living (stress management), and it’s not focused on exploring emotions/interpersonal processes.
What is a counselling group?
Focuses on interpersonal process/problem solving related to thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It emphasizes inner strengths, help members resolve problems in living/dealing with developmental concerns.
Principles of group dynamics?
Members have a strong sense of belonging to group, barriers between leader/members are broken down, more attractive a group is=greater influence it exercises on its members. Change in 1 part may cause stress in members, pressures for change created through shared perception by members for need for change.
Factors affecting group membership?
Cohesiveness, compatibility, satisfaction (reward), problems they have, influence on others, morale, and norms/social climate
Factors that affect group activity?
Size of group, threat reduction, disruptive leadership, goal formation, flexibility, consensus, process awareness/continued evaluation, and degree of intimacy
What are group norms/the 3 purposes?
Spoken or unspoken rules that guide how team members interact/collaborate/work together. 3 purposes- predictive (basis for understanding behaviour of others), relational (some norms define relationships), and control (regulate behaviour of others).
What is group cohesion based on?
Trust (among members and trust in leader). Without trust, cohesion cant be formed. Cohesion creates sense of belonging/group attraction. Trust build self exploration and participation.
What is feedback in groups?
Group members/leader share with each other about personal reactions and it must be given with sensitivity/respect. It helps members realize how their behaviour affects others.
What is group leaders function in feedback?
Be a role model, create climate of safety, encourage honest feedback, ensure feedback is given with compassion/care, and difficult feedback should be well times/non judgy.
Benefits of group therapy?
Provides natural laboratory, creates sense of community, offers unique opportunities for new learning, and can move propels in creative directions.
What is universality?
Group members see similarity in human struggles of other with their own struggles. Members who struggle to share emotions can learn from experiences of others. Group offer hope that a different life is possible.
5 stages of a group?
Pre-group stage, initial stage, transition stage, working stage, and final stage.
What is the pre-group stage?
Involves steps of developing a group: group theme, proposal, member recruitment/selection
What is the initial stage?
Involves orientation/exploration. Member could be anxious/insecure and they bring concerns. Yo develop group norms, explore fears/expectations, identity personal goals, and create a safe space.
Group leader functions for initial sage?
Teach members how group works, discuss confidentiality, develop group norms, works to develop trust, be open/present, assist members to explore fears, help members establish personal goals, and teach basic skills like active listening.
