Integrative Approach Flashcards
What is counselling?
Personal matter that involves a personal relationship. Outcomes are dependent on honesty, sincerity, acceptance, and understanding. Techniques chose to fit the client and it’s important to respect your client.
What does integration mean?
To combine, mix, blend, or coordinate different elements into a whole
Integrative approach?
No single theory is comprehensive enough to account for complexities of human behaviour. And no set of counselling techniques is always effective in working with diverse populations. We need to be open to various ways of integrating theories/techniques to enhance efficiency .
How to develop your own personal approach?
It should reflect you values. Think about the approaches that you connect with and work these into your practice.
6 beliefs of Integrative counselling according to jeffrey kottler?
Work on relationships, honour/respect our pt, people need catharsis (give people a place to dump), people need structure to take action, insight/action need to be used together, and he disagrees with Roger (he says insight is not enough and we need to use techniques).
Aspects of integrative counselling according to Kottler?
All therapists likely pull from various theories, each therapy has capacity to be helpful, the who we are is more important that what we do, develop your own model using a flexible approach, be responsive to pt needs, and remembers clients are doing their best to cooperate.

- Nothing works with everybody
- Goal is what client wants to happen
- Define client strengths to superimpose on client problems
Goal of integrative therapy according to Ivey?
Define strengths from which we can superimpose on a problem.
