working REPRO (Si) Flashcards
Purpose of Reproduction
to continue the species
Male Repro System
- 2 testes
- ductal system
- access glands
- Penis
Testicles
- 2 of them
- located in SCROTUM (hanging sac cooler than body, hangs hi in cold for warmth)
- Contains SEMINIFEROUS tubules
- Location of SPERMATOGENISIS
Testosterone
Develop male secondary sex characteristics (hair, deep voice, adams apple, muscle mass)
Sperm
- HEAD (acrosomal cap) - an organelle, contains digestive enzymes to break through egg
- MID PIECE, contains mitochondria
- TAIL, mobility
Lifespan of sperm
- bed sheet/tissue: few hrs (until dry)
- in water (tub): longer, wet/warm
- vagina (acidic, not hospitable)
Time for sperm to reach an egg
5 min - 1 hr
Male Repro ducts
- Epididymis
- vas deferns (ductus deferens)
- ejaculatory duct
- urethra
Seminiferous Tubules
- in testes
- 1-3 per teste
- location of spermatogenisis
Epididymis
coiled tube on posterior of teste. stores sperm to maturity (1 mos)
- 4-6m
- stems from RETES TESTES which stem from seminiferous tubules
- ENDS @ start of Vas Deferens
Vas Deferens
aka Ductus Deferens
Epididymis -> pelvic cavity -> loops over bladder -> joins w seminal vesicle -> to form ejaculatory duct
Vasectomy
- Spermatic Cord (BV, nerves, vas deferens)
- sever both vas deferens’
- causes male sterility
- ejaculate w be seminal fluid w no sperm
POST OP
- Sperm analysis tests to confirm no sperm
- no sex for 1 week
Ejaculatory Duct
- located behind bladder
- formed by union of Vas Deferens + Seminal vesicle
- duct passes through prostate gland, joins w urethra
Flow of ducts - STEVE
ST- seminiferous tubules
E- epididymis
V- vas deferens
E- ejaculatory duct
Leads to urethra
Urethra
- bladder to end of penis
- urinary meatus, external opening of urethra
- urethral sphincter, prevents simultaneous flow of urine and semen (at base of prostate gland)
Urethra, part of what 2 systems
Urinary and Reproductive

Urinary and Reproductive
Cowper’s Gland
- pair of pea sized glands , beneath prostate.
- Pre-Ejaculate
- secrete alkaline fluid (flush/cleanse urethra)
- to neutralize acidic urine in urethra to make hospitable for sperm
Urine pH - 6
Body pH - 7.35
