What is Job Satisfaction?
The collection of attitudes that people have about their job
“A pleasurable, positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experience”
What are the two Aspects of job satisfaction?
- Facets of satisfaction:
-work
-compensation
-boss
-cowroker
-promotions
(all treated independently) - Overall Satisfaction: Average or total of the attitudes that individuals hold towards various facets of their job.
(Measured using Likard 1-7 scale or non-verbal face scale less often)
What two elements interact to determine worker satisfaction?
The individual worker themselves, and the job Situation they find themselves in
What characteristics of the worker themselves come into play with job satisfaction?
Dispositional Factors-
High Extraversion, conscientiousness -> high satisf.
High neuroticism-> lower satisf.
Mood & Emotions-
Emotional contagion-> if few people are extreme, that sentiment spreads.
Groups conform on emotions
Belief and Value Discrepancy-
Does your work go contrary to your beliefs? Do you value the outcome of your work
Fairness-
Distributive wrt resources, rewards or no?
Procedural fairness with processes and raises, promotions, layoffs, work assignments.
What characteristics of the work Situation have an effect on Job Satisfaction?
Challenging work
Need good balance
Motivation theories
Adequate compensation
Not necessarily abt money
Career opptnty
Rlnshp with coworkers
- Working with people who you like, friendly, cheerful, upbeat -> more satisf in lower-tier careers - Higher cognitiv performance based job: liking ppl doesnt matter. Do they help u ahcieve your goals? Higher tier careers
Ho do Job Satisfaction and Job performance relate?
They do not relate directly. Performance is a complex measure often a function of ability and motivation.
Job satisfaction affects motivation but not abilities
Where is the effect of job satisfaction most apparent?
“volitional” behaviours: organizational citizenship behaviours, likelihood of voluntary absences, turnover
