What is Power
A potential or actualized influence in a dependent relationship
How can power dynamic be changed between two people?
A change in the level of dependency between them
What are 3 types of power?
Legitimate Power: derived from status within organization, eg job title
Reward Power: Power derived from ability to grant reward, or take away something desirable
Coercive Power- The power to punish someone
What are the power levels of strength?
Reward and Legitimate are equal
Coercive is weaker
What are 2 other types of power?
Expert pwoer: derived from specialized skillset
Referent Power- Power granted when well liked by others. One of the best power sources bc when someone likes you they identify with you and if they think youre on the same time like that they will help you.
People cant hold cognitive dissonance. If they like you, they cant dislike you! So they will be biased against bad things they hear about you.
Referent power doesnt need any basis in another form of power or position or anything. Can be built and developed at any time.
Which types of power are best to engender commitment and overall?
Expert and referent power. They give true commitment from people
How can you take advantage of expert talent?
Develop your skills early- develop unique skills
Make sure your work is VISIBLE so that they know you have that skill.
Ensure your specialized knowledge is valuable and applicable.
Seek out the unusual tasks to complete
What is the power and perspective taking model?
People in position of power become less dependent on other people
from there, they lose touch with the need/ability to read and understand other people. Spend less time thinking about what other people think and focus on their own perspectives
What were some results of studies regarding that theory?
Theory somewhat confirmed!
They dont understand other perples perspectives as well, reduced accuacy in assessing others emotions
When the person with high power was given privileged information and asked to estimate what someone without that info would think about a situation, their decision was made with that info the other didnt have, projected it on them
What is powers influence on creativity?
High power leads to high creativity, or unbound creativity while low power quashes it
What influence does power have on ethics?
People with high power will not undertake principled dissent! They often align with the company and do not see their actions as harmful.
High ranking employees have lower odds (significantly) of whistle blowing
How does body language interact with power?
Body language brings across a persons power.
Wide expansive stances indicate high power.
Consciously taking on a power pose changes brain chemistry
How do vocals interact with power?
Power position had effects on loudness, pitch, and more components of a persons speech. Low power also inhibits laughter patterns in multiple ways. Laughter being more/less contained, prolonged/ extended etc
Tactics to convert Power to Influence

Select tactics based on WHO youre influencing and what your base of power is
- Rationality: logic, reason, compromise (Expert power base, one of best approach overall)
- Ingratiation: Flattery (Referent Power Base- cant go wrong!)
- Exchange: Doing favours, offering to trade favours
- Coalition forming: Seeking united support
- Assertiveness: Ordering, nagging, verbal confrontations (Coercive base of power)
- Upward Appeal: Make appeals to superiors for interventions

Peers: Exchange, ingratiation, upward appeal
Superiors: Rationality
