Strep antibiotic classes - adults
Penicillin, cephalosporin, macrolides
Strep - adult penicillin G Benzathine
1.2 million units IM x 1
No longer the standard of care
Strep - adult Penicillin V
500mg 2-3x day x 10 days
Strep - adult amoxicillin
500 mg Po bid x 10 days
1000mg Po daily x 10 days
Strep - adult cephalosporin
Cephalexin - 500mg Po bid x 10 days
Strep - adult macrolide
Azithromycin 500mg daily x 3 days
Or
500mg orally day 1, 250mg orally days 2-5
Strep - child penicillin V
<= 27kg - 250mg 2-3x per day x 10 days
> 27kg - 500mg 2-3x per day x 10 days
Strep - child amoxicillin
50mg/kg per day orally in 2-3 divided doses (max 1000mg per day) for 10 days
Strep - child cephalosporin
Cephalexin 40mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses x 10 days (max 500mg/dose)
Strep - child macrolides
Azithromycin - 12mg/kg (max 500mg) on day 1 followed by 6mg/kg/dose (max 250mg/dose) once daily on days 2-5
Strep complimentary care
Steroids
Increase fluids
Cold, numbing agents
Change toothbrush
Tylenol
Saltwater gargle
