Eye Function Flashcards
What are the eyes housed in?
Bony orbits
What are the tarsal plates?
thin connective tissue that anchors the eyelid muscles
What are the muscles of the eyelid
Orbicularis oculi and levator ocularis superioris
What does orbicularis oculi do
close the eyelid
What does levator ocularis superioris do
Raises upper eyelid
What does the lacrimal apparatus do
supplies nutrients and oxygen to the corneal cells by diffusion and produces tears
What is the function of tears
Lubricate and contain antibacterial lysozyme and antibodies
What is the function of the sclera
Attachment for eye muscles; pierced superiorly by optic nerve and blood vessels
What are the characteristics of the cornea
- Controls much of refraction
- Contains many pain receptors
- Regenerates quickly
- Lacks blood vessels
- Immune privilege
What is the choroid
rich in melanocytes and blood vessels that supply all layers; helps absorb light and prevent it from reflecting or scattering
