What kind of jobs did women undertake during the war?
Work in factories making weapons, uniforms and other supplies
some where employed in government departments or offices
women where also employed in agriculture and transport conduction
Which are of employment showed the greatest increase in females employment
Engineering, particularly in the dangerous munitions industry probably because they wanted to do there but but the wages where far higher.
What is meant by dilution
Breaking down skilled work that required qualifications into smaller straight forward tasks that unskilled workers would be able to do
How long did women continue working
Government insisted the dilution measures would only be in place until the war was over but employers liked the idea of paying less so many women continued there work after the war.
Why was munitions work considered so dangerous
In total 61 women died from chemical poisoning and 71 died in explosions. Most suffered long term health issues as a result of the exposure to toxic gas and acid
Why did women want to carry out munitions work despite the danger?
They wanted to be seen to ‘do there bit’ and it paid far more then other roles
