why did the Arawak’s and Caribs (native people of the Caribbean die)
Exposure to European diseases they where not immune to such as dysentery and whooping cough.
Why did the make up of the population change?
By 1800 90% of the cars ran population was African and slaves out numbered the white population by 20:1
Small traditional farms where replaced by large scale plantations
To create plantations land was cleared of its natural plants and habitats where destroyed
Sugar, cotton, tobacco and coffee where ‘cash crops’ grown only for profit.
Slaves where not producing goods for there own use and cash crops where taken away by ship to the UK.
Caribbean society became hierarchy.
White slave owning men where at the top of society and slaves at the bottom with no rights as written in laws called slave codes.
The Caribbean supplied 90% of the sugar consumed in Europe
Jamaica became dependent on the sugar crop and any fall in international price was disastrous
