They could be employed in other areas during the war. Fishing boats where turned into minesweepers and fishermen where wanted because they new the water around Scotland well.

In September 1914 all east coast ports in Scotland where taken over by the Royal Navy. The North Sea was closed to almost all fisherman and fishing was banned in the Clyde. As a result employment dropped drastically
What was the fishing industry like in the 1920’s and 30’s
Not good. Boats needed repairing due to damage in the war but the navy refused to pay for them. Foreign customers stopped buying Scottish herring and the guarantee prices where removed. Herring became less profitable and the industry suffered.
