WMM Flashcards
A01.1
central executive, coordinates information from the environment and our senses into different stores, doesnt store any information and has selective attention so can inhibit info as it can only process one peice of information at a time, has a limited capacity
it also deals with cognitive taks such as mental arithmatic and problem solving
visuo- spatial sketchpad, this processes visual and spatial information has a capacity of 3/4 items and records arrangments in a visual field allowing us to reherse visual spatial informtion
it also remebers shapes aand colours
intro
the WMM is a multi component system consiting of…
it has a limited capacity and only holds info for a breif periods oof time while performing mental operations
it suggests that complex reasoning and learning tasks reuquire a mental worspace to hold and manipulate information
A03.1
strength- baddeley demonstrated the prescence and importance of the CE on a study of alzheimers patients who are known to have decreasing CE functioning as disease progresses, using dual tasks, verbal and visual tasks together, along with controls. healthy elderlys and young adults.
found that alzheimers patients could compelete taksks seprately but couldnt multi task and complete tasks together demonstrating issues with CE multitask and interpret information and coordinate info at the same time. demostrating role of CE
although, hard to meaure the CE as we cant measure it on its own but only through dual tasks performance therefore it could be due to dysfunvtion of e.g. phonological loop not the CE
A01.2
phonological loop includes phonological store- inner ear processes acoutstic information 1-2 seconds - speech and inner voice which uses subvocal rehersal to store info we want to retain/ speak
episodic buffer, communicates with both LTM and WMM componentts back up store which retains information from LTM in STM while use info needed, but has a limited capcity of 4 chuncks
A03.2
strength: WMM is better explanation the MSM, peterson and peterson
strength: supported by KF who had a digit span of 1 second suggesting his phonoligcal loop impared, couldnt recall verbal memories but could recall visual memorys demonstrating diff components
weakness: case study unique brain damage, cant ethically replicate, ID’s
application
- idea that difficult to make use of the same store at the same time as the WMM has a limited capacity, advice given to students about listening to music- phono store and revising- articulary process, improve revision techniques
