case studies Flashcards
A01.1
longitudinal - involves studying an individual over a long period of time e.g. lifetime to identify changes in behaviour e.g. deterioration of memory, e.g. decreasing function of CE in Alzheimers patients, HM- studied from 27-82 to see how his amnesia effected his memory
ideographic approach-studying one or a small group in great derail e.g. an individual that has an issue with their memory e.g. HM who had both retrograde and anterograde amnesia studied from 27 carrying out lots of tests and studies most days.
A03.1
weakness: casestudies are only based on one or a very small group of individuals normally with brain damage therefore doesn’t control for any individual differences, normally unique therefore may not be representative of memory of other individuals.
- e.g. HM had ‘clean’ amnesia, rare as only memory that effected him, cant generalise findings about hippocampal damage to other individuals
A01.2
collects quanl data- rich, at a expressed in words through interviews, questionnaires and observations to determine changes or concepts based on our memory
e.g. HM-remebers memories before 16 th birthday, vaigley remembers fathers death, reintroduces self to Milan and corking every time as if they’ve first met, surprised at reflection in mirror
collects quant data- numerical data collected via IQ, psychometric tests e.g. based on memory recall
HM
such as forgets after 30 seconds, improves on star tracing task, 30 times, 20 second , 7th 10
A03.2
strength: quant data, objective, limits researcher bias, cause and effect can apply stats tests to compare data
weakness: qual data subjective may include bias, likely develop relationship with ppt, therefore may be bias and void making negative judgments, therefore findings may not be valid and includee biases
A01.3
triangulation use variety research methods within study to gather its of evidence about out memories help us understand how our memories work
observations, surprised in mirror, reintroduced self
interviews- childhood clear memories, lacked context, dimily aware fathers dearth, able to draw house floor plan unable to describe workplace
questionnaires, ID, general knowledge of key public events, assasination of president
task performance- maze and star
A03.3
triangulation allows rich and detailed conclusions to be formed and applied to society labour out memory e.g. HM types of memory episodic, semantic, procedural- increasing reliability and validity of findings which can be used to enhance our understanding of memory
weakness- over a long time may not be relevant by the time published, psych is a fast moving study where may have found out ideas by the time case study conclusions released
