practical investigation Flashcards
aim and hypothesis
to investigate the effects of dual tasks on recall using the WMM, recalling words when rehersal was either with of without playing the bop it
experimental hypothesis - recall of list of 10 words when using the bop it during learning/ rehersal will be worse than learning/ rehersal of words without playing the bop it
sample
lacks gen- limited sample, using psych students, king edwards college stourbridge, age 16/17, ethnocentric, not representitive of how other individuals may recall words with dual tasks
strength: memory is seen to be universal
procedure
strength: standerdised, firstly word list of 10 words presented on the board, ppt had 30 seconds to remember as many words as possible without bop it, and then were given 1 minuite to write down as many words as they could rememeber and a score was collected when words were presented back onto the board. a different word list was then presented on the board, this time ppts played bop it while learning/ rehersing words, again presented for 30 seconds and given 1 minuite to write out what remevered
weakness: lacks mundane realism
strength: high control over ppt variables e.g. dyslexia can impact WMM- repeated measures
results
using a 5% level of significance, n=25 1 tailed test observed value=0 smaller than the critican value
therefore significant difference can be found between thoes playing bop it while rehersing and thoes who didnt
therefore we accept the experimental hypothesis and reject the null hypotheseis
demonstrates that it becomes much more difficult to prociess 2 peices of info that are processed in the same store- phonological loop which can have practical applications to society such as advising students to revise in silent, as not, may reduce their recall, helping them improve performance in school
