MSM essay Flashcards

A

the MSM suggests an explanation as to how information from the environemt is encoded. forgotten, transferred and stored. it suggests that firstly info from out 5 senses is processed in the sensory store ehich has an unlimited capacity, and holds info for a few milliseconds
if this info is paid attention to it transfers to the STM capacity of 7+/- 2 items and a duration of 18-30 seconds, if elaborate rehersal takes place info is transferred into the LMT via the rehersal loop, unlimited capacity, unlimited duration although info can be forgotten via displacment/ decay,

tip of the tounge phenomenon when we know something but cant think if it immediately, we use the associative process to use other/ similar memorys which contian enough info to guess

A

strength: baddley supports, found that we encode memorys differently to differnt stores of our memory. he found that we encode into our STM, acoustically as we suffer from acoustic confusion and simerally LTM semanitiically suffering from semantic confusion. this supports the MSM as it shows that different types of information is processed in seperate stores STM and LTM

weakness: artificial lab study, lacks eco val, may not be representitive of how we encode info in real life situations decreasing credibility of supporyting ev

Q

A03.2

A

strength: peterson and peterson found that when use triagrams to show how rehersal is prevented info is lost from the STM via decay, they also found that STM had a limited duration as recall after 3 seconds was 80% although after 18 seconds recall was much poorer at 10%, demonstrating how if maintenance rehersal doesnt occur memory is forgotten and not transferred into LTM, this supports the MSM as it suggests we only have a limited duration and after this info is fprgptten unless we reherse info in the rehersal loop

weakness: reductionist, WMM suggests that it is not just a passive storage space but a active process with muliple components that process different kinds of info, visuo spatial sketchpad, phonological loop , msm suggests passive storage space before info transferred to LMT.
KM supports- had lost ability to form verbal memories but could still form visual memories- demonstrates different complenets not just one store therefore, msm is over simplifying the complexity of out memories

use of elaborate rehersal to transfer STM to LTM by creating semantic links, linking new memories to old memories in LTM, mindmaps with semtnatic links, colourful. e.g.
