Choppy / Rough Pulse – Description?
- less than 70 bpm (4 bpb)
- hesitant / uneven
- does not flow smoothly (but still a regular rhythm)
- in a way, opposite of slippery
- can be forceful or forceless
What are the 3 slow pulses?
- Slow
- Moderate
- Choppy / Rough
Choppy / Rough Pulse – Pathology(s)?
1) Stagnation - pulse will be Forceful due to excess (stagnation of qi, blood, or phlegm)
2) Blood Vacuity - pulse will be Forceless (not enough blood for significant flow, therefore not enough pressure & hesitant flow)
How is the Rough / Choppy Pulse drawn?
- 2 drawings: excess version & vacuity version
- both drawings have 3 beats (instead of 4)
What are the possible pulse types for a Phlegm condition?
1) Slippery or Choppy Pulse – if phlegm condition is in vessels
2) Soggy Pulse – if phlegm condition is outside vessels, in the skin or flesh
Moderate Pulse – Description?
- feels slow, but isn’t
- normal range: 70 to 74 bmp; 4 bpb
- even & balanced
- sometimes referred to as the “leisurely” pulse
- mostly represents health & abundance
A Moderate Pulse may be compared to what other Pulse? Why?
Slippery Pulse, which feels fast but isn’t.
Moderate Pulse – Pathology?
- mostly represents health & abundance
- Damp if pathological
Moderate Pulse – Drawing?
looks very similar to the drawing for a Slippery Pulse, except drawn with 3.5 beats (instead of 4 beats)
Slow Pulse – Description?
- less than 70 bpm (probably 60 to 70 bpm), less than 4 bpb
- may be forceful or forceless

Cold (could be excess or vacuity)
