wk11 - pulses - 3 irregular Flashcards
Name the 3 irregular pulses.
· Skipping
· Bound
· Irregular / Intermittent
Which of the irregular pulses have no pattern to their rhythm?
Skipping & Bound pulses lack a regular rhythm
Which of the irregular pulses has a pattern to its rhythm?
Irregular (or Intermittent) pulse has a regularly irregular rhythm
Skipping Pulse – description
· fast, rapid
· skips beats / irregular rhythm / no pattern
Skipping Pulse – pathology
Heat, usu. in Heart:
· Excess Heat: Stagnant Blood or Phlegm (forceful)
· Deficiency Heat: Vacuity of Yin or Qi (forceless)
Skipping Pulse – image
· depict beats somewhat close together, since this pulse is rapid
· no regular rhythm
Bound Pulse – description
· slow, arriving idly (in contrast to Skipping Pulse)
· irregular rhythm
Bound Pulse – pathology
Cold, usu. manifested in Heart:
· Excess: Phlegm Cold (forceful)
· Excess: Blood Stagnation combined w/ Cold (forceful)
· Deficient: Vacuity Cold aka Yang Vacuity (forceless)
Bound Pulse – image
· represent beats shallower and beats not as close together as Skipping image, since Bound pulse is slower
· no regular rhythm
What is the primary difference between the Bound & Skipping pulses?
Cold (Bound) vs Heat (Skipping)
Intermittent / Irregular Pulse – description
· regularly irregular - skips beats in a regular manner
· most serious of the irregular pules (in biomedicine, may be precursor to ventricular fibrillation)
Intermittent / Irregular Pulse – pathology
· pain & trauma / shock
· Qi & Blood Vacuity (usu. Heart Qi & Blood Vacuity)
Intermittent / Irregular Pulse – image
· depict with beats like arches in staccato yet with a regular pattern
