Q

What is Unsurfaced Heat?

A

· often assoc. with damp
· subjective presentation: pt. feels warm but to practitioner it feels like mild heat
· to practitioner: heat is more than in Mild Heat (may need to wait a moment before feeling heat)
· heat may not be as deep as steaming bone, but it’s unsurfaced bc damp mutes

16
Q

What is Interior Heat due to Blood Vacuity?

A

· mild fever

· blood loss patients whose internal thermostat is hot (e.g. postpartum women)

17
Q

What is Interior Heat due toYin Vacuity?

A

· classic nighttime fever

18
Q

What is Interior Heat due to Qi Vacuity?

A

· mild fever
· biomedically may be referred to as “fevers of unknown origin” – low grade fevers with no infectious agent, general malaise
· in TCM, malaise is due to Qi Vacuity

19
Q

What is interior Heat due to Yang Vacuity?

A

· classic “true cold / false heat” (serious vacuity)

· patient feels cold on interior, but presents with heat at surface & feels hot to touch

20
Q

Why would a patient with Yang Vacuity present with “true cold / false heat”?

A

· yang vacuity is such that the only yang they have left presents at surface
· if their yang is vacuous, their yin is probably vacuous, so whatever yang remaining is unanchored & comes to surface
· thus there is seemlngly all this heat at the surface, but they are severely yang deficient
· treatment involves warming the patient (removing heat will not help) & banking up yin

21
Q

A patient presents with the complaint of feeling cold and being unable to get relief. What is the nature of the patient’s condition?

A

Excess Cold – bc if it were Vacuity Cold they would get relief from warmth & covering

22
Q

If a patient presents with night time sweating, what is the most likely diagnosis?

A

Yin Vacuity
