Q

A patient with excess frequency of and/or volume of urine, and no odor, has what pathology? Explain.

A

· KD Yang Vacuity
· frequency bc the holding fxn of Yang is compromised
· volume bc the transformation fx is compromised
· often seen in pregnant women & elderly

Q

A patient with excess frequency but NOT volume of urine, and some odor, has what pathology? How does the color and odor vary depending on the severity of the condition?

A

· KD Yin Vacuity
· KD’s ability to secure is affected, therefore urinating frequently in small streams
· color ranges from straw-colored to dark depending on severity of Yin Deficiency (heat increases dilution & odor)

Q

A patient with excess frequency but NOT volume of urine could also have what pathology (besides KD Yin Vacuity)? Explain.

A

· Excess Heat in the lower burner (LI, SI, UB)

· heat speeds up movement but dries fluids, so there is increased frequency but less volume

Q

A patient with excess frequency of urine, pain/burning sensation, and urgency has what pathology? What are some accompanying sx?

A

· HT Heat transferring to LI (in biomedicine, recurrent UTI or irritable bladder syndrome)
· increased frequency of urination but not necessarily large volume
· tongue tip red, rapid heart rate, palpitations

Q

A patient with lack of urination has what pathology? Is this more or less serious than incontinence? Who might have this condition?

A

· KD Yang Vacuity – due to failure to transform fluids
· more serious than incontinence
· may see it in patients with edema or pregnant women

Q

A patient with bladder blockage has what pathology? Explain.

A

· Damp (Cold or Hot) – that accumulates, stagnates, and causes blockage in the urinary bladder system
· Wiseman describes this as “stranguary” – painful, frequent urination of small volumes that are expelled slowly only by straining and despite a severe sense of urgency, usually with a residual feeling of incomplete emptying

Q

A patient with blood in the urine may have what pathologies?

A

· Heat (bright red blood) – heat causes blood to become chaotic & leave the vessels
· SP Qi Vacuity – SP’s fxn of holding blood in the vessels is compromised
