Wines Flashcards

Both Gideon Owen wines and Guest List wines are covered here, but I tried to include more info for G. O. wines, for obvious reasons. Updated 11/27/24.

Q

What is Vidal Blanc anyway?

A

A hybrid white grape produced in the 1930s by Jean Louis Vidal. Because of its cold tolerance, it is very popular across the northern U.S., and in Canada. Because of its cold tolerance and high sugar content, it is often used to make ice wine.

42
Q

Guest List: What’s a Gruner Veltliner, anyway?

A

It’s a grape variety grown mostly in Austria. It can be made into a variety of wine styles, but is usually dry and high in acidity.

(Note: yes, there’s supposed to be an umlaut over the first U. Sorry.)

43
Q

Guest List: Which two Sauvignon Blancs are available? By the bottle, or by the glass?

A

St. Clair Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is available by both the bottle and glass.

Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc is available by the bottle only.

44
Q

Guest List: Describe the St. Clair Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

A

(This card is currently incomplete. Sorry. This winery produces several different varieties, and I need to figure out which we carry before I research.)

45
Q

Guest List: What does the “Marlborough” in the St. Clair Sauvignon Blanc mean?

A

It’s the region in which it is grown and produced. In general, Marlborough sauvignon blancs have a grassy, green character, with medium body. They are typically a high-acid wine, and the flavors are more tropical or fruity, with herbacious aromas.

46
Q

Guest List: Describe Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc.

A

(Once again, blank for now. I need to figure out which bottle we carry.)

47
Q

Guest List: Where’s the Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc from?

A

Napa Valley, California.

48
Q

Guest List: What’s the new Cotes du Rhone Blanc on the menu?

A

Domaine de la Solitude is a French Cotes du Rhone Blanc available by the glass and by the bottle.

49
Q

Guest List: Where is the Cotes du Rhone Blanc from?

A

France! This type of wine is names for the region it is from. Therefore, it will always be from the Cotes du Rhone in France.

50
Q

Guest List: What is a Cotes du Rhone Blanc, anyway?

A

“Cotes du Rhone” is the name of the region that this wine is produced in. “Blanc,” means that it is a white wine.

By law, this wine must contain a minimum blend of 80% Clairette, Grenache blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, and Viognier.

51
Q

Guest List: Which three varieties of grape make up the La Solitude Cotes du Rhone?

A

60% Viognier
20% White Grenache
20% Rousanne

52
Q

Guest List: Describe some taste notes of the La Solitude Cotes du Rhone.

A

Taste: Lemon blossoms, white peaches, Asian pears.

Medium bodied, dry, but not extremely dry.

Saline finish, giving it a crisp and fresh taste.

53
Q

Guest List: Is there a pinot noir available by the glass?

A

No, there is not. Belle Glos Clark & Telephone is bottle-only, and there are no other pinot noirs on the menu.

However, there is a machine in Tirage that is only for pinot noir, so exclusive drinkers of this type of wine can always use a wine card and get a glass.

54
Q

Guest List: Which Pinot Noir is offered by the bottle only?

A

Belle Glos, Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir (California)

55
Q

Describe the taste of the Belle Glos Pinot Noir.

A

Deep ruby red in color with lush aromas of ripe cherry, nutmeg, dark chocolate and holiday baking spices.

Bold and complex flavors of black plum, crushed raspberry and blueberry pie linger on the palate.

The texture is rich and lively, and leads into a warm and structured finish.

(Description copied from their web site. If you check reviews on other sites, it has mixed reception, and is noted as a very unusual pinot noir, being much bolder, thicker in texture, and much sweeter than other examples. Seems like a love it or hate it wine.)

56
Q

What’s with the wax seal on this Belle Glos Pinot Noir? How do I serve it?

A

Wax seals are just another way to protect the cork. Some say that wax seals are more environmentally friendly than foil, as foil is expensive to produce and harder to recycle.

To open, don’t try to cut through the wax. Just stick the end of your corkscrew through it, and open it normally. When you pull up on the corckscrew, the wax seal around the lip of the bottle should pull off cleanly, and remain on top of the cork.

57
Q

Guest List: Which Cabernet Sauvignon is available? By the glass, or bottle only?

A

Austin Hope Barrel No. 22 (California) is available by both the glass and bottle.

58
Q

Describe the Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon.

A

Fruit forward Cabernet Sauvignon

Aromas of dark fruit, fresh vanilla bean and hints of coffee.

On the palate: dark brooding fruit flavors are balanced with savory notes of
black pepper, baking spices along with a touch of tobacco to add warmth
and dimension. Notes of sweet oak, lively acidity & fine dusty tannins
complete this wine.

(Pulled from their web site. In practice, this wine is great for anyone who likes a bold, California-style cab.)

59
Q

What’s a Paso Robles?

A

Paso Robles is an AVA (American Viticultural Area – a specific region in which wine grapes are grown) in southern California. Though previously mostly known for growing Zinfandels, inthe 1960s, the growers there began to plant varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon.

Today, over 40 varieties of grapes are grown here, and the region is known for Zinfandel, Cab Sauv, and Rhone-style wines.

60
Q

Guest List: Which two sweet wines are offered? By the glass, or bottle only?

A

Both sweet wines, Stella Rosa Pink, and Quady Winery Electra Moscato, are available by the glass and by the bottle.

61
Q

Guest List: Describe Stella Rosa Pink.

A

Stella Rosa Pink is a lightly carbonated wine with flavors of strawberry and rose petals.

62
Q

Guest List: Describe Quady Winery Electra Moscato.

A

Red Electra Moscato is a sweet red wine made in a frizzante style that’s bubbling with fruity aromas and flavors of ripe cherry, juicy red berries, sweet peach and tart pomegranate.

(Copied from their web site. In practice, recommend this wine to anyone who asks for a sweet wine, or tries Summer Blush and finds it too dry.)

63
Q

What does “frizzante style” mean, anyway? Which Guest List wines have this quality?

A

Basically, lightly sparkling.

Frizzante is an Italian term, and the next step down from a “truly” sparkling wine, or spumante. Frizzante is legally defined as a wine having between 1 and 2.5 bars of pressure at 20˚C. Essentially, it’s carbonated, but not so carbonated that it’s unsafe to sell with a screw-top cap.

Both Stella Pink and Electra Moscato are frizzante wines.

64
Q

Guest List: is there a Moscato on the menu?

A

Yes! Quady Winery Electra Moscato is a red Moscato. It is available by the bottle and by the glass.

65
Q

Guest List: Can guests buy a Guest List wine by the bottle to take home with them?

A

Mostly no. Ohio liquor laws prohibit selling sealed guest list wines. However, if the wine is opened, it can be re-sealed and sent home with the guest.

66
Q

Can a guest purchase a Gideon Owen wine to take home?

A

Yes! You can ring them up for a retail wine in Toast, and get it from the Tirage room.

Otherwise, you can send them to the Tirage room to purchase any Gideon Owen wine.

67
Q

What if someone wants to sample a Gideon Owen wine?

A

They can! Ring in a wine sample under G.O. Wines, and special request the type they want to try.

Wine samples are $.50 each.

Note: try to limit them to 3 samples per table.

68
Q

What if someone wants to sample a Guest List wine?

A

Sorry, no luck. Guests can only sample Gideon Owen wines for $.50. If the wine they want to try is in the Tirage room, they can buy a card and try it there.

69
Q

Do we offer wine flights?

A

Not really, and definitely not as table service. If someone asks, direct them toward Tirage, where they can purchase a wine card and essentially build their own flight.

70
Q

Are all Gideon Owen wines available by the glass?

A

Almost all of them! However, the Meritage, Chardonnay, and Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon are Reserve wines, and are only available by the bottle.

71
Q

Are all Gideon Owen wines available by the bottle?

Can someone order a full bottle in the restaurant?

A

Mostly, yes! They are all available for purchase in the Tirage room by the bottle (ie, retail price).

However, all the wines that are “on tap” behind the bar will be served in the restaurant as a “full carafe,” which is the same size.

72
Q

Guest List: does Gideon Owen still carry Pink Catawba?

A

No, though Mon Ami wines are still in production through Firelands Winery, Gideon Owen doesn’t carry any of them.

However, Stella Pink is a pretty close match for someone looking for a similar style of wine.
