The CIWC (Catawba Island Wine Company)
What was the CIWC?
A cooperative formed by local farmers and grape growers.
What modern-day rooms are part of the original structure?
The Tirage room, the loft, vineyard room, and all four of the wine cellars.
How did the CIWC lose the building? How long was it empty after?
The CIWC went bankrupt in the early 1900s, which caused them to lose ownership of the building. After, it sat empty for 25 years.
What was the building used for during the 1920s?
It was an indoor put-put course!
In what year was the building sold to Mon Ami Champagne Company?
1937.
In what year did the fire happen?
1943.
Was anyone hurt in the fire?
Yes, one person was killed in the fire.
What parts of the building survived the fire?
Just the limestone walls.
When was a restaurant added to the restaurant?
About two years after the 1937 fire, when the building was being reconstructed. During this time, the ballroom was upstairs, a dining room was added to the main floor, and an addition was added for the kitchen.
Who purchased the Mon Ami Champagne Company in 1956?
The Mantey family, who continued to produce wine and champagne under the Mon Ami name.
What year did production of wine on site come to an end? Why?
In 1980, the Paramount company bought the building, and moved all production of wine off site. The lower cellars were still used for storage for a few more years, before falling into disuse as well.

June 2019.
