Wind Flashcards
1
Q
How are winds formed?
A
The unequal heating of the atmosphere and the Earth’s rotation leads to movements of air over the Earth’s surface (wind).
2
Q
Where do winds blow from?
A
Areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
3
Q
What creates low pressure at the equator?
A
When air is heated, it expands. This makes it lighter and so it rises.
4
Q
Where does the air begin to cool?
A
At about 30° north and south of the equator.
5
Q
What creates high pressure?
A
When air is cooled it becomes heavy and sinks towards the Earth’s surface.
6
Q
Where does most of the sinking air move back to in the equator?
A
Between 30° latitude and the equator.
7
Q
Where does the rest of the air flow go?
A
Towards the poles.
