Measuring Weather: Atmospheric Pressure Flashcards
1
Q
What is atmospheric pressure?
A
It’s the weight of the atmosphere pressing down the Earth.
2
Q
What instrument is used to measure atmospheric pressure?
A
Barograph
3
Q
What is a barograph like?
A
It consists of a small container with a moveable top.
4
Q
How is the barograph used?
A
As the atmospheric pressure rises, the top is pushed inwards. As the pressure decreases, the top pushes back up again. A system of levers connect the top to a pen, which traces atmospheric pressure onto it, located on a revolving drum.
5
Q
What is the unit of measurement?
A
Millibars (mb) or hectopascals
