What is a rain gauge like?
A
A measuring cylinder with a funnel on top placed in an open area, not sheltered by anything, in order to ensure an accurate reading.

How does a rain gauge work?
A
The rain falls through the funnel into the cylinder. When the funnel is removed, the amount of rain that has fallen can be recorded.
