Latitude Flashcards
How is the Earth divided?
Into the northern and southern hemisphere
What is the equator?
The imaginary line dividing the northern and southern hemisphere. It’s used as a start point for measurement and is 0°.
What are the lines of latitude?
The lines around the Earth that measure distance from the equator, they extend to the poles.
Where is the South Pole?
90° south of the equator
Where is the North Pole?
90° north of the equator
Why is the equator closest to the sun?
The Earth’s spherical shape. This means that areas closer to the equator are warmer than areas closer to the poles.
Why do the sun’s rays emit the most heat at certain places on the Earth?
The sun’s rays have a shorter distance to travel to the equator so the heat is more intense here than at higher latitudes.
Why are the rays not as intense on higher latitudes?
They are slanted so therefore cover a larger area
