What is used to measure wind direction?

What is a wind vane like?
A
It’s composed of an arrow that freely rotates on top of a fixed vertical rod. The letters N, E, S and W are attached to the rod to indicate the cardinal points.

How does the wind vane work?
A
The tail of the arrow is larger than the tip and this is blown forward by the wind, leaving the arrow pointing in the direction from which the wind’s coming.

A
The point of the compass from which it’s blowing.
