Why are biomes found where they are? Flashcards
Reasons why biomes are found where they are
. Latitude . Distance from the sea . Ocean current . Altitude . Relief rainfall and mountain ranges
Latitude
The sun’s ray gets focused on smaller areas at lower latitudes. This means that at the equator the temperatures will be higher
Distance from the sea
Inland areas tend to be hotter and drier than the coast. In the summer energy from the sun heats up the land more rapidly than the sea so temperatures are higher inland. In winter the land loses heat more rapidly causing colder winter inland.
Ocean current
Warm current called the North Atlantic Drift brings warm water from the South West to the UK
Altitude
Temperatures decreases with altitude. There is a decrease of 10 degrees with every 1 km upwards. The reason for this is as the air is thinner and cannot retain the heat energy
Relief rainfall and mountain ranges
As warm air rises and then cools, rain falls.
